Journey to the Center of My Being

Work on Journey to the Center of My Being began ten years ago. After the end of a painful relationship, Tim left Santa Cruz in a 27-foot motorhome and headed into the vast expanses of the American High West.

This fictionalized account, with its cycle of poems, is based on the voyage of self-discovery he endured during that long summer. The physical journey, which took place in the motorhome, wandered for a hundred and forty-one days and ten thousand miles across California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.

In what turned out to be a deeply moving personal quest, Tim left Santa Cruz for Big Sur, then struck west to the Sierras, the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau. He drove
through Nevada’s ranges and high valleys, Utah’s reefs and arches, Colorado’s mountains and river gorges, New Mexico’s pueblos and ruins, Wyoming’s coalfields and grasslands, South Dakota’s Badlands and Black Hills, Montana’s forests and lakes, Idaho’s lava fields
and pineclad canyons, Oregon’s deserts and basalt massifs, and California’s volcanoes
and coastal peaks, as he struggled to find the depth of his very being.

Synopsis

The book is a narrative interwoven with about 60 poems:

In absolute despair, I drive south from Santa Cruz, California. With thoughts only of suicide, I flee my marriage and young child in a 27-foot long motorhome. But this is only the latest of many failed relationships – I seem doomed to repeat my mistakes over and over again.

I park on the top of the Santa Lucia Mountains, Big Sur. I am wracked by guilt, think of returning, but fight against it. I don’t want to go back to that terrible, abusive relationship. I wander down a dry arroyo, nearly die, but am mysteriously brought back by a red-tailed hawk. I consider staying up on the ridge forever and becoming a hermit. I perform a naked circle ceremony and see the key battle within my ego: as it tries to protect me, it represses much that I need to deal with. So, what do I want: to protect, or to enter the cave?
